Baby: 4 tips for a good night’s sleep

A pacifier falling out, the need to be nursed or rocked back to sleep… There’s no shortage of reasons why your little one wakes up at night. To help him (and you) enjoy a good, peaceful night’s sleep, here are a few tips to adopt immediately!

Getting him off the pacifier

With the pacifier falling out 10 times a night, it’s hard to keep the baby asleep all night long. To remedy this situation, you have a choice: either take him off the pacifier completely or don’t rush to put it back in his mouth. Let the baby cry for a few minutes to give him a chance to learn to go back to sleep on his own. But if he can’t, rock him briefly to help him calm down.

Is your baby a light sleeper who wakes up at the slightest noise? Opt for white noise. In addition to masking other noises, these continuous sounds remind your little one of the sounds he heard in your womb, helping him to relax and fall asleep.

As your little one grows, he acquires new skills, such as crawling or standing up. That’s why he often prefers to exercise rather than sleep. So if he wakes up in the middle of the night to play, don’t react immediately and let him go back to sleep on his own. But if he starts to cry, perhaps because he’s having a separation crisis, rock him briefly to reassure him, then put him back to bed.

During his first weeks, Baby suffers from colic, and breastfeeding is a great relief. However, he may get used to this nocturnal feeding and wake up every night to suckle. So, once your pediatrician has given the go-ahead for nighttime weaning, gradually reduce feedings until you stop them altogether. Follow the same procedure if your baby is bottle-fed.

To sleep comfortably, your baby needs to stay dry all night.

To achieve this:

Change his diaper just before putting him to bed.
Give him a drink at least one hour before bedtime.
Use a diaper that can keep your baby dry all night without having to wake him up to change it.
Use the right diaper size, because if it’s too small, it won’t protect your little one from leaks while he’s sleeping peacefully.
